Pride Month | This is me, Brenda

Last updated on

June is Pride Month, a month dedicated to recognizing the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, their history, achievements and ongoing push for equality.

This year, we spoke to Brenda Viquez (she/her), a Risk Specialist and member of our TC Pride Employee Inclusion Network (EIN) in our Mexico City office. As a proud member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, she shared her story with us.

Meet Brenda

My name is Brenda, and I’ve been part of TC Energy for over two years as a Risk Specialist based in our Mexico City office. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my long-term partner, Judith. We love to create new dishes in the kitchen or relax with a movie, either at home or in theatres. While I love horror and thriller films, I’m always happy to watch a drama with her too (Judith’s favourite!).

Beyond my love for scary movies and cooking, music has been a profound part of my upbringing and a way to connect with my roots. I grew up in a family of musicians – my younger brother, dad, uncles and grandfathers all played instruments. In fact, my dad, brother and I even have our own band. My dad plays the trumpet, my brother plays the bass and my specialty is the piano. I’m still trying to convince Judith to learn the saxophone so she can join us. Together, our band plays salsa, cumbia and the occasional jazz piece. I have an appreciation for all types of music, but some of my favourite artists are pop musicians like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Music allows me to express myself and connect with my family.

Faced with challenges

My story isn't one without challenges. My family has a religious background, where traditional values and expectations shaped much of our life. The thought of being honest with my family about my true self was terrifying. I feared rejection, disappointment and losing the deep bond I had with them. I remember vividly the first time I tried to talk to my mother about my orientation. Her initial reaction was one of confusion and resistance. She struggled to reconcile her beliefs with the reality of having a daughter who didn’t fit into the mold she had envisioned. It hurt, but I also understood that change takes time.

I knew I couldn’t hide who I was forever. Over time, my mother began to open her heart and expand her horizons. She started having conversations with other members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who came from families that did not accept their orientation. These discussions gave her new perspectives and helped her process her feelings in a way that felt less isolating. Slowly but surely, her views began to shift. She realized that my relationship with Judith, my partner of eight years, was no different from any other loving relationship. It was built on trust, compassion, mutual respect and a deep sense of care for one another.

As my mother’s understanding grew, things began to get easier. It's been a journey, but seeing her growth has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life.

Throughout it all, I’ve been fortunate to have friends who accept me for exactly who I am. From the beginning, my friends have been open-minded, supportive and loving. They never questioned or judged me, and they’ve been my rock through this journey. Knowing I have a circle of people who embrace me fully has been a source of strength and joy.

Did you know?

The rainbow flag became the symbol of 2SLGBTQIA+ pride in 1978, created by artist and activist Gilbert Baker. Tasked by Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., to create a symbol for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Baker envisioned a flag that would represent diversity, unity and hope.

Embracing Pride

Pride Month holds a special place in my heart. It’s a statement that says we are here, and we are proud of who we are. Participating in the marches and events rejuvenates my spirit, highlighting the progress we've made and the journey still ahead. I'm an active part of the TC Pride EIN, and I’m proud to work for a company that wholeheartedly embraces my community.

To those in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who are still finding their path, my message is simple: don’t let fear hold you back. Embrace your true self, because meaningful change in the world starts with us. Surround yourself with allies – they will give you the strength and courage to be authentic. It’s my hope that by sharing my story, it inspires others to embrace their truth.
