TC Energy intern’s non-profit aims to encourage students to pursue an education in STEM
Creating a more inclusive and diverse future
Brennan O’Yeung is not your average student.
Currently, the 21-year-old is enrolled in engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, is a valued engineering intern at TC Energy and is also inspiring young students to pursue a career in STEM through his non-profit, Escape with STEM.
Born out of Brennan’s love for escape rooms and his observation of the underrepresentation of Indigenous and female students in his engineering classes, Escape with STEM utilizes STEM-based escape room/locked room puzzles and experiences to inspire students to explore STEM-related education and career opportunities from a young age.
By combing his passion for escape rooms and his career, Brennan hopes to encourage and inspire students to pursue an education in STEM, creating a more inclusive and diverse future.
Award-winning idea
Brennan’s amazing work was recently recognized when he was one of nine recipients of the coveted 2020 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award on Dec. 4, 2020. The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards recognize extraordinary Albertans whose volunteer efforts have contributed to the well-being of their community and fellow community members.
“When I got the award, I was really excited, happy and felt fortunate that they were recognizing my efforts,” says Brennan. “Winning the award shows me people believe in the idea and that it is making a meaningful impact for those in my community.”

Brennan is also thankful for TC Energy’s support and is inspired by our workforce giving and volunteering program, Empower.

Although he had to pivot during COVID-19 and move to an online platform, that has only increased Escape with STEM’s impact in the community. When it is safe to do so, he hopes to continue to grow and go back into the schools to work with the students directly.
