Youth farm safety education a top priority for TC Energy

Sept. 20-26 marks National Farm Safety & Health Week in the U.S. This years’ theme, Every Farmer Counts, is meant to acknowledge, celebrate, and uplift America’s farmers and ranchers who continue to work hard to provide the food, fiber, and fuel that we need. In recognition of this week, we want to celebrate the farm safety organizations across North America that we support through our community giving program, Build Strong.

As a company that operates in hundreds of rural communities, landowners are often our neighbours, and their safety is important to us. That’s why we support organizations like the Canadian Agriculture Safety Association (CASA), Agriculture for Life (Ag for Life) and the Progressive Agriculture Foundation (PAF) that teach rural and farm safety – including how to safely identify and work around underground utilities.

“Safety is our footprint. What we need is healthy vibrant communities where we own and operate assets,” says Terri Steeves, Vice-President, Canada Gas Operations and Ag for Life board member.

“By supporting agriculture, we are supporting strong communities.”

Our Agriculture Safety Partners

PAF is dedicated to making farm, ranch and rural life safer and healthier for children, so no child becomes ill, injured, or dies from farm, ranch or rural activities.

This year, TC Energy is celebrating six years of partnership with PAF in support of their Safety Day program, which is the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America.

Through our partnership with CASA, we help bring PAF Safety Days to Canada.

We value TC Energy’s commitment to Progressive Agriculture Safety Days and the enrichment of our six-year partnership. Their development of hands-on, educational resources, like the Youth Energy Safe program, have nicely complemented our underground utilities safety curriculum. Additionally, support from TC Energy employees in delivering key safety messages enhanced the experience of our volunteer Safety Day Coordinators throughout North America.”

As a founding partner, TC Energy has supported Ag for Life since 2011 in their mission to promote farm safety among western Canadians through their Safety Day Program and Rural Safety Mobile Trailer. Together, these programs help educate youth and adults on how to safely identify buried utility lines.

“One of my key passions as an Ag for Life board member is leveraging all of the industry learnings about safety and implementing those learnings for both corporate agriculture and the family farmer,” continues Steeves.

“An example is encouraging farmers to conduct meaningful risk assessments and job safety assessments. This is especially important when talking to children in farming families who need support learning how to identify risks and hazards.”

Thanks to this programming, the number of farm fatalities and injuries in western Canada have significantly reduced.

Teaching Youth Energy Safety

In addition to our partnerships, TC Energy’s Public Awareness team has created a Youth Energy Safe program that brings tools and teachings from the field into the classroom for instructors and youth to learn how to stay safe around utilities at home and in schools.

Youth from not-for-profit organizations such as 4-H and Girl Guides can earn a $1,000 reward for their organization by conducting safe digging practices.
