In recognition of International Women’s Day, we’re having discussions about unconscious biases in the workplace across the company this week. Wendy Straatmann, vice-president, Technical Services, U.S. Gas Operations, is one leader who understands how our unconscious biases can inadvertently affect our behaviours in the workplace and is an advocate for becoming more aware of the unconscious biases we all hold.
Landing a summer job related to their area of interest is not always an easy feat for students – but this year, throw in a pandemic, and locking down a solid summer job became an even bigger struggle. Through our decade-long partnership with Community Futures Treaty Seven (CFT7) – a non-profit organization focused on economic development, training and employment with Treaty 7 First Nations – TC Energy hired two CFT7 summer students who have been working with us this summer. Since 2010, our Indigenous Relations and Talent Acquisition departments have teamed up to support CFT7 on a variety of initiatives, including employment symposiums, a youth advisory committee and as a partner employer in its First Nations Summer Career Placement Program.

Today, the inaugural TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy at the University of Houston’s College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics came to a close. The program, which supported 50 high school students interested in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) majors with the transition to college, was touted a success amidst the challenges of hosting it virtually due to COVID-19.

We congratulate Canadian Indigenous leaders for securing a landmark Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program with the federal government. The program promotes self-determination and unprecedented opportunities for Indigenous ownership in energy projects. Today’s announcement recognizes the vital role Indigenous Peoples play in Canada’s energy resource economy.
