Leaving a Legacy of Giving in northern B.C.

For many, the stress of the pandemic has taken its toll. For some, it has made access to necessities like food and housing even more challenging. Coastal GasLink wanted to find an impactful way to help those most in need; that’s where United Way of Northern British Columbia (UWNBC) stepped in to support. UWNBC has a legacy of supporting those most in need in Northern B.C., making them the perfect fit to help Coastal GasLink give back to the communities where we operate.  

At the start of September, Coastal GasLink launched our Legacy of Giving Campaign in partnership with UWNBC that ran from Sept. 8 – Oct. 8. The Coastal GasLink community came together to raise over $97,000 for communities along the project route, with over $33,000 matched by TC Energy’s workforce giving and volunteering program, Empower.

The Empower program supports and encourages our workforce to give back in ways that resonate with them personally to make an impact in the communities where we work, live and operate. In 2021, TC Energy’s Canada Gas business unit, including Costal GasLink raised more than ​C$480,000 for causes in need.

Through UWNBC, the Legacy of Giving funds raised will help local non-profits develop vital programs and services that address socio-economic challenges in Northern B.C. Such as food security, poverty & social assistance, housing & homelessness and mental health & addictions. A donation that would not have been possible without the hard-working Coastal GasLink team that personally gave their money to make a difference in our local communities.

For public affairs advisor Tanner Moulton, the donation means that we can reach every community along our project route.

"In the midst of a year marked by a pandemic, wildfires, and other challenges, we wanted to go above and beyond to help those most in need. That’s why we partnered with The United Way of Northern British Columbia to engage our workforce and centralize their efforts to one cause that positively impacts each community across our project route,” shares Tanner.

Coastal GasLink is proud to support causes important to communities where we operate as we continue building our relationship with UWNBC. Last year, Coastal GasLink had the opportunity to donate to UWNBC’s COVID-19 Relief Fund which provided much-needed support for those most vulnerable in our communities, including seniors, homeless and individuals struggling with mental health and addiction issues.

The $97,000 in funding will be distributed by UWNBC throughout 2022, with applications to apply for funding open now until Dec. 20, 2021. To learn more the Legacy Fund and how to apply, visit the UWNBC website.
