Saddlebrook Solar + Storage

Power icon
A power project

The Saddlebrook Solar + Storage Project strengthens Alberta’s electricity grid by delivering reliable energy when Albertans need it most. When complete, it will operate as a combined solar power and battery storage facility. The project is being delivered in two phases, with Phase One now operational and Phase Two underway.

Completed in early 2024, Phase One focused on the solar facility, including installation of bifacial (double-sided) solar panels that can generate 81 megawatts of electricity per day—enough to power approximately 20,000 homes. The electricity produced flows into the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) through an on-site substation, supporting seamless connection to the grid.

Now in Phase Two, we are evaluating battery energy storage system technologies. Once in place, the battery will work alongside the solar facility to store energy for use during periods of high demand, further strengthening grid stability across Alberta.

Situated on TC Energy-owned land within the Saddlebrook Industrial Park in Aldersyde, Alberta, the project exemplifies our ability to connect communities to the energy they depend on. By investing in projects like this, we’re not just powering homes and businesses—we’re powering progress.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS

The project is designed to deliver long-lasting value for communities. With Phase One now operational and planning underway for Phase Two, the project continues to support economic growth at the local, provincial and national levels.

Employment opportunities—Construction activity creates demand for a wide range of skilled trades and services, including equipment operators, electricians, mechanics, construction services, truck drivers, labourers and more. Phase One alone created approximately 300 jobs over the construction lifecycle.

Business opportunities—Construction supports local businesses by increasing demand for goods and services. Vendors interested in working with us can visit TCEnergy.com/Vendors to register as an interested local service provider. We award contracts to qualified construction contractors and work with them to provide local employment opportunities.

Annual revenue to support local services—During construction, the project generates tax payments to municipal, provincial and federal governments. Once fully operational, the project contributes ongoing annual tax revenue that helps support schools and hospitals, emergency services, recreation facilities, recycling programs and other local programs vital to sustaining communities.

Investments in local communities—Through our ongoing engagement with local communities, we identify opportunities to help build stronger, more vibrant communities through our Build Strong program, which supports partnerships in the areas of safety, education, community and the environment.
