Leadership, learning and a defining moment for North American energy

Last updated on

“Natural gas will be the backbone of economic growth in North America for many, many decades to come.”
—François Poirier, President and Chief Executive Officer

In a candid and wide‑ranging conversation, François shares his journey to the CEO role and insight into how energy will shape North America’s economic and geopolitical future. Listen to François here:

Canada has a time‑bound opportunity

Canada’s energy challenge is no longer about ambition—it’s about execution. Slow permitting and regulatory uncertainty are costing Canada competitiveness, putting economic sovereignty at risk in a world where speed, certainty and strong oversight determine who leads.

Energy literacy is essential

Energy systems across North America are often overlooked because they work so well. But the lack of visibility limits public understanding of their importance. Natural gas is the backbone of reliable, affordable and lower-emissions energy and will continue to drive North America’s economic growth for decades to come.

North American energy strength

Looking ahead to the next phase of trade talks, the continued free flow of energy across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico remains foundational to North America’s long-term strength. A deeply integrated, cross-border energy system supports energy security, reliability and global competitiveness, and will continue to do so in the years ahead.

A journey shaped by curiosity and values

Raised in Ottawa, François studied industrial engineering and later moved into finance, joining what would become J.P. Morgan. Early on, he was assigned to cover utilities and pipelines—launching a 20‑year career working for energy infrastructure companies. TC Energy became one of his closest clients, and the company’s regard for fairness and respect were qualities that drew him to its leadership team. His leadership approach has been shaped by curiosity and continuous learning. And lessons from his father—including staying true to his values and embracing discomfort—continue to influence how he leads today.
