NGTL GP Decommissioning Program (2026)

We’re modernizing our NGTL System to more efficiently connect communities and the economy to the energy they need. Through an asset lifecycle assessment, we have identified that certain pipelines and associated facilities are no longer required to meet customer demand. We’re proposing to safely remove these facilities from service through a process called decommissioning, which is used when a pipeline or facility is taken out of service in a corridor where another nearby pipeline or co-located facility continues to operate and provide service to the area.

NGTL GP, a part of TC Energy, is proposing to permanently cease operations at 11 lateral pipelines or loops and one co-located meter station on the NGTL System within Alberta. The pipelines range from four to 12 inches in diameter and from 50 metres to approximately 21 kilometres in length.

  • A pipeline loop is a new section of pipe constructed next to an existing line along the same right‑of‑way to increase capacity and reliability.
  • A lateral is a smaller pipeline that branches off a mainline to connect customers, facilities or communities to the larger natural gas system.
  • A meter station is an above‑ground facility that measures the flow and quality of natural gas as it moves through the system.
