NGTL GP Abandonment Program (2026)
We’re modernizing our NGTL System to more efficiently connect communities and the economy to the energy they need. Through an asset lifecycle assessment, certain facilities such as meter stations and laterals have reached the end of their lifecycle and are no longer required for transmission services. As part of this process, we’re proposing the safe abandonment of these facilities. This work will involve permanently ceasing service, completing physical Abandonment Activities like removing above-ground facilities or cutting, cleaning and capping pipelines that will remain below ground, and reclaiming disturbed areas.
NGTL GP, a part of TC Energy, will submit an application to the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) to safely abandon 33 meter stations and 37 lateral pipelines, loops and/or producer tie-ins on the NGTL System within Alberta. The pipelines range from four to 30 inches in diameter and from 50 metres to approximately 75 kilometres in length.
- A pipeline loop is a new section of pipe constructed next to an existing line along the same right‑of‑way to increase capacity and reliability.
- A lateral is a smaller pipeline that branches off a mainline to connect customers, facilities or communities to the larger natural gas system.
- A producer tie-in connects third party natural gas supply to the existing natural gas system, supporting safe, reliable and efficient delivery to market.
