TC Energy celebrates the Virginia Reliability Project, enhancing energy security

Pipeline investment supports economic growth, job creation, tax revenues and energy connected communities across the Commonwealth

TC Energy Statement

TC Energy and its partners hosted today a symbolic golden weld event celebrating the Virginia Reliability Project (VRP), a transformative natural gas pipeline infrastructure investment designed to power Virginia’s future.

“This is more than steel in the ground—it’s a promise kept to Virginians,” said Tina Faraca, Executive Vice-President & Chief Operating Officer, Natural Gas Pipelines, TC Energy. “Reliable natural gas is the catalyst for energy security, economic growth, and resilience. Thanks to the trust and teamwork of our workforce, our customers and supporters at every level, we’ve delivered a natural gas infrastructure project that will fuel opportunity for generations to come.”

Proposed in 2021, the VRP involved replacing nearly 49 miles of pipeline with state-of-the-art, American-made steel pipe and integrating advanced technology to enhance safety, efficiency and reliability of natural gas transportation. Construction began in July 2024 after extensive community engagement and regulatory approvals, and the final weld is expected to be completed in the coming days. First deliveries of natural gas are expected in November.

The achievement of this project is a testament to the vision and commitment of business leaders, local communities and government officials at every level who recognize the critical need for reliable, affordable energy in Virginia. Their collaboration ensured this project could move forward and deliver benefits that will last for generations.

“With VRP, we’re not just modernizing infrastructure—we’re laying the foundation for enduring progress and prosperity,” Faraca added. “Virginia is central to America’s energy story, and today we’ve written the next chapter together.”

Beyond its energy and security benefits, VRP will deliver millions in new tax revenues for schools and community services while creating lasting economic opportunities across the Commonwealth. This achievement is a powerful example of what’s possible when communities, businesses and governments come together around a shared vision for Virginia’s future.

For nearly 70 years, TC Energy’s Columbia Gas Transmission network has been part of Virginia’s backbone, serving the Hampton Roads region and beyond. With VRP nearly complete, Virginia will be equipped with the reliable energy it needs to grow stronger, more resilient and more prosperous for decades ahead.

TC Energy in Virginia

  • One of our foundational systems in the U.S. is the Columbia Gas Transmission network. TC Energy’s presence in Virginia dates back to the 1950s, marking approximately 70 years of continuous operations in the Commonwealth.
  • The company has extended its footprint each decade since the 1950s and now operates approximately 1,200 miles of pipeline, 12 compressor stations and 225 meter stations across Virginia.
  • Columbia Gas Transmission’s (TCO) Virginia Reliability Project is an expansion and reliability project that would replace two existing segments of the TCO pipeline system to continue reliable and abundant natural gas supply.
  • TCO has been providing energy to the Hampton Roads region for more than 70 years, and as demand for natural gas rises across the region, these important updates will improve natural gas reliability and help meet the current and future needs of the Hampton Roads region.
  • The project is expected to be in service in November 2025.
