Canada’s first LNG exports: unlocking prosperity through nation-building infrastructure
Statement from TC Energy President and CEO François Poirier
Congratulations Canada. This is a historic moment. The first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) marks a significant milestone. It unlocks more of North America’s energy potential while creating economic prosperity for Canadian families and strengthening the country’s economic sovereignty.
Over 15 years ago, Canada was at the starting line with the U.S. in pursuing LNG exports. While the U.S. has successfully become the largest LNG exporter in the world, today Canada enters the global market — putting the country on the path to becoming an energy superpower and supporting North American energy security.
I am proud that through a bold and united vision, Canada has at last achieved this milestone thanks to LNG Canada and its joint-venture partners, and Coastal GasLink — a nation-building pipeline project and the critical link in connecting secure, affordable and sustainable Canadian natural gas to the world. Together, along with thousands of workers and Indigenous and local communities, we created an extraordinary legacy. It is a testament to the power of what can be achieved when industry, labour, Indigenous and local communities and governments work together.
Here are a few of the outcomes that resonate the most with me:
- Completing the first direct pathway for Canadian natural gas to reach international markets – the first pipeline to the West Coast in 70+ years.
- Creating Indigenous equity ownership opportunities in Coastal GasLink and enabling Cedar LNG, the first Indigenous-led and majority-owned LNG facility.
- Together, the LNG Canada and Coastal GasLink projects represent the largest private sector investment in Canadian history at $40 billion.
- Displacing higher-emitting coal-fired power generation and providing secure, reliable energy to the world.
- An unparalleled safety record, with 59 million hours worked and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our teams and communities.
- Creating more than 25,000 well-paying jobs for families, $4 billion spent on B.C. businesses and suppliers and awarding over $1.9 billion in contracts to Indigenous and local businesses.
- Harnessing unprecedented collaboration between industry, our customers and partners, labour, Indigenous and local communities and government.
- Setting a new standard for major infrastructure development in British Columbia and Canada through the unprecedented support and collaboration with Indigenous and local communities, delivering jobs and economic opportunities and a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
This is just the beginning of Canada’s LNG journey. There are further untapped benefits within our reach with LNG representing the single largest opportunity for Canada to create shared economic prosperity and also to reduce global emissions.
I take immense pride in TC Energy's contributions to this achievement and our continental network of assets will continue to play an important role in shaping North America's expanding LNG landscape and meeting growing global energy demand.
