TC Energy celebrates
Black History Month

Posted by TC Energy

In the month of February, we recognize Black History Month (BHM). This month celebrates the rich, vibrant history, culture, and accomplishments of the Black community while acknowledging the challenges faced over hundreds of years.

I am our Senior Advisor of Community and Workforce Giving in the U.S., and passionate member of the Black community. In my role, I work on our Build Strong and Empower programs — my team manages all of our corporate donations and employee giving and volunteer programs. My favourite part of my job is being able to partner with non-profits and make a positive impact to help those in need.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am an avid cook and someday I hope to open a restaurant with my two siblings — serving the delicious soul food that my grandmother was known for to honour her legacy. Some of my favourite dishes to make are chitterlings and greens.

Celebrating Black History Month is extremely important to me. I believe gaining an understanding of Black culture and improving education about Black history is crucial to diversity, inclusion and how we move forward together.

Growing up it was really impactful to see people who looked like me, how they were contributing to society and embracing the entirety of who they are. I learned a lot about Black culture and history through Black History Month celebrations at my local church and with my family in a way that was not necessarily taught in schools at the time.

Celebrating Black History Month

Some of my favourite ways to celebrate Black History Month are:

  • Showing support on social media – I post educational facts about Black history and culture throughout the month of February. Connect with me on my personal LinkedIn and stay tuned for my takeover of our TC social channels later this month!

  • Learning more about Black history and holidays:
    • Kwanzaa — I celebrate Kwanzaa every year with my family. Kwanzaa takes place on Dec. 26 — Jan. 1 and is a holiday created in the midst of the Black Freedom Movement, focused on strengthening the African American community.
    • Juneteenth — Juneteenth, recognized on June. 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and African American freedom. I think it’s important that everyone knows the significance of this day.

  • Celebrating Black cinema — I love to celebrate and watch Black cinema. Some of my favourite movies to watch are:
    • B.A.P.S — I really appreciate the story of love and community defying racial boundaries!
    • The Great Debators — I am huge Denzel Washington fan and I quote this movie all the time.
    • The Color Purple — A classic and one of my all-time favourite movies, a must watch in my opinion!

  • Supporting Black-owned restaurants — I encourage everyone to check-out Black-owned restaurants in their own communities. A few of my favourites in Houston are Frenchy’s Chicken and Gatlin’s Barbecue.

I encourage everyone to participate and get involved in Black History Month. I think there may be perceptions that Black History Month is only for Black people, but everyone can do their part to get involved, learn more, ask questions and show support for the community.”

Looking towards the future

Although we still have a long way to go, I am proud of the work TC Energy is doing to focus on diversity and excited by the endless possibilities for the future.

We've built partnerships with Prairie View University, Texas A&M, University of Houston, and West Virginia University as well as several partnerships with technical institutions to develop the next generation of diverse talent in the industry and our workforce. This Black History Month I encourage everyone to listen, learn and celebrate Black culture and never be afraid to bring their full selves to work.

I am excited by the large amount of diverse talent we are going to see in the future — as an organization we have to make sure we are inclusive and support everyone’s growth and development, no matter your background, race, or culture.”
