Edson Mainline Expansion Project

Overview

The Edson Mainline Expansion project is now in service.

NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of TransCanada PipeLines Limited, an affiliate of TC Energy Corporation, constructed, owns and operates the Edson Mainline Expansion Project to provide pipeline capacity for the transportation of natural gas to growing markets located in central and southern Alberta from the Peace River Project Area.

The Project consisted of two pipeline components adding up to approximately 85 kilometres (km) of newly constructed 48-inch pipe to the NGTL System.

The Elk River section consists of approximately 40 km of 48-inch pipeline located 115 km southeast from Hinton, Alberta, in Yellowhead and Clearwater County. This section went into service on October 7, 2022.

The Alford Creek section is approximately 45 km of 48-inch pipeline located 29 km west from Rocky Mountain House, in Clearwater County. This section went into service on October 31, 2022.

NGTL submitted an application to the National Energy Board (NEB), predecessor to the Canada Energy Regulator (CER), under Section 52 of the NEB Act in Q2 2019 for permission to construct, own and operate the project. On November 19, 2020, the CER issued a report recommending that the Governor in Council (GIC) approve the project.

This Project was part of TC Energy’s $1.5 billion expansion to the NGTL System to connect WCSB supply to incremental market demand. Read more.

Regulatory

How are we regulated?

The proposed Edson Mainline Expansion Project will be part of the NGTL System, which is governed according to regulations outlined by the Canada Energy Regulator (CER), formally called the National Energy Board (NEB).

Regulatory information

As required by the NEB, NGTL filed a Project Description with the NEB on January 8, 2019. This Project description can be viewed on the CER’s website here.

Project application

NGTL filed a Section 52 application with the NEB on April 3, 2019 for approval to build, own and operate the project. That application can be viewed on the CER's website here. On November 19, 2020, the CER issued a report recommending that the Governor in Council (GIC) approve the project.
